The fault shows when the main breaker on the low-voltage side trips. There is then no power to the turbine and it stops. The service company cannot reach the turbine, drives out and finds there is no power from the kiosk. They cannot do more than that.

As the approved operator, it is then our job to find the fault. As the breaker ages, its relays can wear and trip even without overload. The only fix is to replace the main breaker.

We work with companies that specialise in this kind of replacement and can supply the breaker at short notice. Otherwise delivery can take many weeks. These are typically 690 V breakers rated 1000 or 1250 A.

It is rarely possible to get a breaker identical to the old one, so another make almost always has to be fitted. The dimensions differ, so some adaptation is needed to mount the breaker and connect the cables.

The photos are from replacing the main breaker in a kiosk for a 750 kW turbine.
